Welcome to Turkey, the land of ancient treasures and Christian heritage. Upon arrival in Izmir, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. Take the evening to relax, stroll along the vibrant seafront promenade, or simply unwind after your journey. This is the beginning of a life changing experience.

Today we travel to Pergamum, once a seat of power and faith. The Acropolis reveals the remains of the Altar of Zeus, the grand theatre, and a library that rivaled Alexandria. Here, early Christians stood strong despite persecution (Rev. 2:12–17). We continue to Thyatira, a thriving trade hub once renowned for its purple dye and honored as one of the Seven Churches. Later, we return to Izmir, ancient Smyrna, where faith endured through trials (Rev. 2:8–11). Overnight in Izmir.

Our morning begins with a visit to Polycarp’s Church, a tribute to one of the earliest Christian martyrs. Then we journey to Sardis, famed for its wealth yet admonished for its spiritual weakness (Rev. 3:1–6). Here we see the grand gymnasium and synagogue. In Philadelphia, John’s words encouraged believers to remain steadfast (Rev. 3:7–13). Although little remains, the spirit of perseverance is palpable. We conclude our day in Pamukkale, relaxing in a thermal spa hotel near the dazzling white travertine terraces.

We step into Hierapolis, where the Apostle Philip was martyred, and walk among its vast ruins overlooking the mineral pools. Next, we visit Laodicea, remembered in Revelation for its “lukewarm” faith (Rev. 3:14–22). Its extensive ruins still reflect the grandeur of a city once thriving with trade and culture. Finally, we pass by Colossae, linked forever with Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians. By evening, we arrive in Kusadasi, a lively coastal town, where we will spend two nights. En route, we’ll stop at a traditional rug cooperative to discover one of Turkey’s living arts.

Today we explore Ephesus, one of the most breathtaking ancient cities in the world. Stroll along marble streets where Paul and John once walked. Discover the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Agora, and the beautifully restored Terrace Houses adorned with mosaics and frescoes. We continue to the Basilica of St. John, believed to be his burial place, offering views over the ancient harbor. Nearby stands the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Overnight in Kusadasi.

This morning we return to Izmir Airport for our onward journeys. As you depart, you carry with you not only memories of remarkable ruins but also the spiritual heritage of the Seven Churches, whose message continues to inspire believers across the centuries.

Before you book you should know

Is this trip right for you?

This trip is aboard a traditional Turkish gullet (a traditional wooden Turkish motor sailing boat). All cabins will have ensuite bathrooms and you’ll stay in a mixture of twin share and double bed cabins, all on the same deck. It’s recommended that you pack light, as cabins are cosy.

All cabins will experience a light engine noise when the ship is moving (and occasionally when you drop anchor). It’s probably worth packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

A good swimming ability is essential on this trip to enjoy all activities.

Many meals are included onboard the boat. Where meals are not included, you’ll have time on land in beachside towns and resort towns for optional meals.

Some activities and excursions will involve a bit of walking. You’ll be visiting ancient sites and historical places, and at times you may be walking on uneven ground in hot conditions. If you have any concerns, please speak to your local leader.

If you’re travelling with your own group of friends or family and would like to book a private departure on this sailing trip, our Tailor-Made team will be happy to help: https://www.ontheroad.travel/tailor-made-tours.php
